Allegations of excessive use of force against law enforcement have exploded in recent years. Broadly speaking, the use of force by law enforcement officers becomes necessary and is permitted under specific circumstances, such as in self-defense or defense of another individual or group. No two situations are the same, and neither are the people involved. Officers receive guidance from their agencies, but no universal rules govern when and how much force they should use.
